چکیده

An information-processing analysis of insight into a singularly deceptive and difficult deductive problem is presented. Two models are described. The first represents an economical explanation of the Ss initial responses but is difficult to reconcile with their subsequent responses induced by certain remedial procedures. The second model does take account of such responses and shows how insight into the correct solution is correlated with the awareness that tests for falsification are more appropriate than tests for verification. The relevance of the experimental results and the explanatory model are discussed in relation to wider issues.

Modal reasoning , models , and Manktelow and Over Philip

Johnson-Laird, P.N., and Byrne, R.M.J., 1992. Modal reasoning, models. and Manktelow and Over. Cognition, 43. 173-182. Manktelow and Over (1991) argue that their studies of Wason’s selection task favor explanations of deontic reasoning based on mental models, but that such theories need to incorporate utilities. This theoretical note proposes a simpler explanation of the phenomena: subjects in ...

Dual Processes in Reasoning?*

Previous results have shown that the introduction of negatives into the sentences used in a deductive problem affected behavior in a systematic way which was independant of the logical structure of the problem. In the present investigation, the subjects were asked to justify their responses when reasoning about such sentences. In accordance with previous results, the responses were dominated by...

Evidence for the Innateness of Deontic Reasoning

When reasoning about deontic rules (what one may, should, or should not do in a given set of circumstances), reasoners adopt a violation-detection strategy, a strategy they do not adopt when reasoning about indicative rules (descriptions of purported state of affairs). I argue that this indicative-deontic distinction constitutes a primitive in the cognitive architecture. To support this claim, ...

Illusions in reasoning about consistency.

Reasoners succumb to predictable illusions in evaluating whether sets of assertions are consistent. We report two studies of this computationally intractable task of "satisfiability." The results show that as the number of possibilities compatible with the assertions increases, the difficulty of the task increases, and that reasoners represent what is true according to assertions, not what is f...
